Worried your baby won’t smash their cake? Learn why every reaction is normal and why cake smash sessions are about personality, not perfection.

One of the questions I hear most often before a cake smash session is, “What if my baby doesn’t actually smash the cake?”

Honestly, that’s a fair question.

If you’ve spent any time looking at cake smash photos online, it can seem like every baby immediately digs into the cake, covers themselves in frosting, and leaves a giant mess behind. While that certainly happens sometimes, it isn’t the reality for every child.

After photographing many first birthday sessions over the years, I’ve learned one thing: babies are going to do exactly what babies want to do.

Some are excited the moment they see the cake. Some spend several minutes studying it before deciding whether they trust it. Some happily dig in with both hands, and some would rather spend the entire session playing with a balloon in the corner.

The funny thing is that every one of those reactions makes for great photographs.

Your Baby Doesn’t Need To Perform

I think parents sometimes put pressure on themselves before a cake smash session because they have a picture in their mind of how it’s supposed to go.

The truth is that there is no right way to do a cake smash.

Your baby doesn’t need to smile on command.

They don’t need to destroy the cake.

They don’t even need to eat the cake.

My goal isn’t to create a specific reaction. My goal is to capture your baby’s personality exactly as it is during this stage of life.

If your little one is cautious, we’ll document that. If they’re silly, curious, messy, serious, or completely unpredictable, we’ll document that too.

Some Babies Need Time

Imagine being one year old and suddenly finding yourself sitting in front of a giant cake with balloons, decorations, and a photographer making funny noises behind a camera.

That’s a lot to process.

Many babies simply need a few minutes to take everything in before they decide what they think about the situation.

I’ve learned not to rush those moments because some of the sweetest expressions happen while babies are figuring things out.

Sometimes parents worry because their baby isn’t immediately interacting with the cake. Meanwhile, I’m over here photographing all the curious looks, smiles, and expressions that are unfolding naturally.

Parents Are Part of the Process

One thing parents are often surprised by is how involved they can be during a cake smash session.

Sometimes a little encouragement is all a baby needs.

Mom or dad might sit nearby, offer a small taste of icing, clap, cheer, or simply make silly faces from behind me.

Other times, baby decides they’d rather sit in mom’s lap for a few minutes first.

That’s okay too.

I’ve never expected babies to follow a script.

We simply meet them where they are.

Some of My Favorite Sessions Have Included Very Little Cake

This is something I always tell parents during consultations.

The sessions people remember most are rarely about how much cake their baby ate.

They’re about the expressions.

The laughter.

The personality.

The way their child looked and acted at one year old.

Years from now, when you’re looking through your photographs, you’ll be focused on your baby—not the amount of frosting on the floor.

In fact, some of my favorite galleries have come from babies who barely touched the cake at all.

Trust the Process

One of the reasons I love first birthday sessions so much is because they’re completely unpredictable.

Every baby arrives with their own personality, preferences, and opinions, and I think that’s what makes these sessions so special.

Whether your baby gently pokes the cake with one finger, dives in face first, or decides the cake isn’t nearly as interesting as the decorations, we’re still documenting an important milestone in your family’s story.

And that’s really what these sessions are about.

They’re not about creating a perfect Pinterest moment. They’re about celebrating your baby’s first year and preserving memories of who they are right now.

So if you’re worried your baby won’t smash the cake, don’t be.

I’ve got you.

And more importantly, your baby doesn’t know they’re supposed to smash the cake anyway. 😉
