One of the biggest concerns parents have before their newborn session is:
“What if my baby won’t sleep?”
If you’re worried about this, you’re definitely not alone.
In fact, it may be the number one question I hear from new parents.
The good news?
Your baby does not have to sleep for us to create beautiful images.
While sleepy newborn portraits are wonderful, they are not the only kind of newborn portraits worth capturing.
Some of my favorite images happen when babies are wide awake and showing off their brand-new personalities.
One of the biggest misconceptions about newborn photography is that babies must be asleep for beautiful portraits.
The truth is that awake babies create some incredibly special images.
Those bright eyes.
The curious expressions.
The little stretches.
The funny faces.
The way they seem to study the world around them.
These moments are unique to your baby and deserve to be documented just as much as sleepy poses.
While many parents initially hope for sleeping portraits, they often fall in love with the awake images just as much.
Just like adults, babies have their own personalities.
Some babies arrive sleepy and content from the moment they enter the studio.
Others arrive curious about everything happening around them.
Some babies sleep through nearly their entire session.
Others prefer to stay awake for a while before settling down.
Every baby is different, and that’s completely normal.
My goal is never to force your baby into a specific timeline.
Instead, we work with the baby we have that day.
Parents often arrive apologizing because their baby hasn’t slept all morning.
Please don’t worry.
Newborn sessions are designed with this in mind.
After feeding, cuddling, and being wrapped nice and snug, most babies become incredibly comfortable.
Many babies who begin their session wide awake naturally drift off to sleep once they are warm, cozy, and relaxed.
It’s actually very common for us to start with awake portraits and transition into sleepy images later in the session.
There is no pressure and no rush.
We simply follow baby’s lead.
One of the reasons newborn sessions are more relaxed than other types of sessions is because babies set the pace.
If baby needs to eat, we feed baby.
If baby needs cuddles, we cuddle baby.
If baby needs a break, we take a break.
The session is centered entirely around your little one’s comfort and well-being.
A comfortable baby is always more important than sticking to a schedule.
As photographers, we don’t get to choose whether a baby arrives sleepy, alert, curious, or extra cuddly.
We simply meet them where they are.
Every baby brings their own personality to the session.
Some are serious.
Some are expressive.
Some are sleepy.
Some want to keep a close eye on everything happening around them.
Every one of those personalities is worth remembering.
Because years from now, you’ll look back and smile knowing that was exactly who they were from the very beginning.
I never want parents stressing over whether their baby is performing correctly for photos.
There is no right way for a newborn to behave.
There is no perfect baby.
There is simply your baby.
And that is exactly who we want to document.
Some galleries contain more sleepy images.
Some contain more awake images.
Both are beautiful.
Both tell a story.
Both preserve memories that can never be recreated.
Sometimes babies have difficult days.
Just like adults, they can be uncomfortable, extra fussy, or simply not themselves.
If your baby is truly struggling and we feel another day would be better, we can absolutely reschedule your session at no additional cost.
I will never force a newborn session simply because it’s on the calendar.
At the end of the day, it isn’t baby’s fault.
We chose the date.
Baby didn’t.
Your baby’s comfort and well-being will always come first.
At the end of the day, newborn photography isn’t about creating a perfect checklist of poses.
It’s about preserving memories.
The tiny fingers.
The tiny toes.
The sleepy stretches.
The curious eyes.
The personality that was already beginning to shine through from day one.
If your baby stays awake for part of the session, don’t worry.
Some of the most treasured images in a gallery are often the ones where parents can look directly into their newborn’s eyes and remember exactly what those first days felt like.
Because whether your baby is asleep, awake, or somewhere in between, their story is worth remembering.
