Wondering what to bring to your newborn session? Learn what your photographer provides, what essentials to pack, and how to prepare for a stress-free experience.

Good news—you probably need less than you think.

As a new parent, it can feel like you’re packing for a week-long vacation every time you leave the house.

Diapers.

Wipes.

Extra outfits.

Bottles.

Pacifiers.

Burp cloths.

The list seems endless.

So when it comes time for your newborn session, many parents ask:

“What should I bring?”

The good news?

Probably a lot less than you think.

One of my goals is to make your newborn session as stress-free as possible, which means I provide many of the items needed for your baby’s portraits.

I Provide Most of the Styling

When parents think about newborn photography, they often picture beautiful wraps, blankets, bonnets, headbands, baskets, and props.

The good news is that you don’t need to purchase any of those items.

I provide a carefully curated collection of newborn photography items including:

  • Wraps
  • Blankets
  • Headbands
  • Bonnets
  • Hats
  • Baskets
  • Props
  • Layering pieces
  • Newborn accessories

Everything is selected specifically for newborn photography and designed to create timeless portraits.

Bring the Basics

While I provide the styling, there are a few practical items I recommend bringing.

These include:

  • Extra diapers
  • Wipes
  • Bottles if bottle feeding
  • Pacifier (if baby uses one)
  • Extra formula if needed
  • Burp cloths

Even if baby doesn’t typically use a pacifier, some parents choose to bring one just in case it helps soothe baby between setups.

Bring Baby Hungry if Possible

If your baby is comfortable doing so, a full feeding shortly before or upon arrival often helps babies settle into the session.

A full belly and a cozy wrap can go a long way toward helping baby relax.

Of course, every baby is different, and we’ll always follow your baby’s needs throughout the session.

Family Participation Is Optional

One thing I love about newborn photography is that every family is different.

Some parents want a baby-only session.

Some want family photographs.

Some want sibling portraits.

Some want a little bit of everything.

There is no right or wrong choice.

Your session is customized around your family’s vision.

What Should Parents Bring If They’re Participating?

If parents plan to be photographed, I recommend simple, neutral clothing.

Soft earth tones, creams, whites, grays, and muted colors photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your connection with your baby.

And don’t forget—I do have dresses available in my client closet for mothers who would like an easy, beautiful option.

Wear Your Maternity Gown Again

One of my favorite options is when a mother chooses to wear the same gown she wore during her maternity session.

There is something incredibly special about seeing those images side by side.

The anticipation of waiting for baby.

The joy of finally holding baby.

Reusing your maternity gown helps beautifully tie both sessions together and tells a complete story of your journey into motherhood.

Special Keepsakes Are Always Welcome

While I provide the styling, I love incorporating meaningful items when families choose to bring them.

Some ideas include:

  • Ultrasound photos
  • Handmade blankets
  • Family heirlooms
  • Special stuffed animals
  • Personalized name signs
  • Religious keepsakes
  • Items made by grandparents

These little details often add an extra layer of meaning to your images.

What Not to Bring

This may sound funny, but one thing I encourage parents to leave at home is stress.

You do not need to arrive with a Pinterest checklist.

You do not need perfectly packed bags.

You do not need a perfectly behaved baby.

You simply need to show up.

I’ll guide you through the rest.

The Most Important Thing to Bring

At the end of the day, the most important thing you can bring isn’t a prop, blanket, or outfit.

It’s patience.

Newborn sessions move at baby’s pace.

We stop for feedings.

We stop for cuddles.

We stop for diaper changes.

There is never a rush.

The goal is creating a calm, enjoyable experience while preserving one of the most fleeting seasons of your family’s life.

Because before you know it, those tiny newborn days will be gone.

And you’ll be so thankful you took the time to document them.
