Learn when to book your newborn session, when newborn photos are typically taken, and why scheduling during pregnancy is the best option.

A guide for expecting parents planning ahead.

One of the most common questions I receive from expecting parents is:

“When should I schedule my newborn session?”

The answer surprises many families.

The best time to schedule your newborn session is actually before your baby is born.

In fact, most families reserve their newborn session during their second or third trimester to ensure availability once baby arrives.

Planning ahead allows you to enjoy those first days with your little one knowing everything is already taken care of.

Why Book Before Baby Arrives?

Newborn photography requires a little more planning than most other sessions.

Because babies arrive on their own schedule, photographers typically reserve space around your due date and adjust once baby makes their grand entrance.

Booking ahead helps ensure your photographer has availability when your little one arrives.

It also allows plenty of time to discuss:

  • Session style
  • Color preferences
  • Family participation
  • Sibling portraits
  • Wardrobe planning
  • Studio preparation

A Special Note for Expecting Parents

One of my favorite things is walking alongside families as they document multiple milestones throughout their journey into parenthood.

Because maternity and newborn portraits tell such a beautiful story together, I offer a special incentive for families who book both sessions.

When you book a newborn session, you’ll receive 50% off your maternity session.

Many parents love taking advantage of this option because it allows them to preserve both the anticipation before baby arrives and those precious first days afterward.

Once your little one makes their arrival, simply send me a message and let me know your newest blessing is here.

We’ll then begin planning your newborn session together.

When Should My Newborn Session Actually Take Place?

While traditional newborn portraits are often photographed within the first two weeks after birth, every family is different.

Some parents are excited and ready to come in as soon as possible.

Others need a little more time to recover, settle into a routine, and adjust to life with their newest family member.

And that’s perfectly okay.

As a mother myself, I understand those first days can be overwhelming.

My approach has never been to rush families.

Instead, I encourage parents to come when they feel comfortable and ready.

If that means scheduling within the first two weeks, wonderful.

If you need a little extra time, that’s okay too.

The most important thing is that you feel relaxed and supported during the experience.

Because while newborn photographs are important, so is the well-being and comfort of the family behind them.

When Are Newborn Photos Usually Taken?

For traditional sleepy newborn portraits, the ideal window is typically within the first two weeks after birth.

During this stage, babies tend to:

  • Sleep more deeply
  • Curl naturally into newborn poses
  • Be easier to settle between poses
  • Retain many of those precious newborn features

That said, beautiful newborn images can absolutely be created outside of that timeframe as well.

What If My Baby Is Already Here?

Don’t panic.

I regularly hear from parents who didn’t realize they wanted newborn photos until after their baby arrived.

Reach out anyway.

Every baby is different, and there are often options available depending on age and scheduling.

It’s always worth asking.

What If My Baby Arrives Early?

Babies have a way of making their own plans.

When you pre-book your newborn session, we simply adjust once baby arrives.

Whether your little one decides to come early, late, or right on time, we’ll work together to schedule your session accordingly.

What Happens After I Deliver?

Once baby arrives, simply send me a message.

We’ll finalize your session date based on your baby’s arrival and how everyone is feeling.

My goal is to make the process as easy and stress-free as possible during those busy first days of parenthood.

Can Parents and Siblings Be Included?

Absolutely.

In fact, I highly encourage it.

Newborn sessions aren’t just about baby.

They’re about documenting the beginning of a new chapter for your entire family.

Parent images and sibling portraits often become some of the most treasured photographs from the entire session.

What Should We Bring?

One of the best things about a newborn session is that parents don’t need to bring much at all.

I provide a carefully curated collection of newborn wraps, blankets, props, headbands, bonnets, and accessories for use during your session.

Many families arrive and simply enjoy the experience while I take care of the details.

If you have a special heirloom, blanket, or meaningful item you’d like incorporated, you’re always welcome to bring it.

My Approach to Newborn Photography

As a newborn photographer, safety always comes first.

Every pose, setup, and transition is done with your baby’s comfort and well-being in mind.

Sessions move at your baby’s pace.

There is never a rush.

If baby needs to eat, cuddle, be changed, or simply take a break, we pause.

Those moments are all part of the newborn experience.

The Days Pass Quickly

One of the things parents tell me most often is how quickly those newborn days disappear.

The tiny fingers.

The tiny toes.

The sleepy stretches.

The way they fit perfectly in your arms.

Before you know it, those early days become memories.

Newborn photography preserves those details before they change.

And trust me—they change faster than you think.

Schedule Early, Relax Later

If you’re expecting and wondering when to schedule your newborn session, the answer is simple:

Book during pregnancy.

That way, when your baby arrives, all you have to focus on is soaking in those precious first days together.

The memories are fleeting.

The photographs help them last forever.
