From maternity and newborn photos to milestone and first birthday sessions, discover why documenting your baby’s entire first year creates a story worth preserving.

One of the things I hear most often from parents is how quickly the first year goes by.

The funny thing is that everyone tells us this before we have children, but it’s almost impossible to fully understand until you’re living it yourself.

One day you’re announcing a pregnancy.

Before you know it, you’re holding a newborn.

Then somehow that newborn is smiling, sitting up, crawling, and celebrating a first birthday.

It’s enough to make your head spin.

As a photographer, I have the privilege of watching many families move through those stages, and one thing I’ve noticed over the years is that the first year isn’t defined by one big milestone. It’s made up of dozens of little moments that seem ordinary at the time but become incredibly meaningful later.

That’s why I believe the first year deserves more than a single photo session.

Every Chapter Tells A Different Story

When parents book maternity photos, they’re documenting anticipation.

They’re celebrating a season filled with excitement, preparation, and dreams about the little person they’re about to meet.

Newborn photos tell a completely different story.

Those images capture tiny details that disappear almost as quickly as they arrive. The sleepy stretches, the tiny fingers wrapped around yours, and the overwhelming feeling of finally holding your baby in your arms are all part of a season that passes incredibly fast.

A few months later, milestone sessions begin telling a new chapter.

Now your baby is smiling.

Interacting.

Laughing.

Showing preferences.

Developing a personality that grows bigger with every passing month.

By the time we reach a first birthday session, we’re celebrating a child who has changed dramatically from the newborn we photographed only months earlier.

Each stage matters because each stage is different.

The Changes Happen Faster Than Most Parents Expect

When you’re in the middle of raising a baby, growth often feels gradual.

You see your child every day, so the changes can be easy to miss.

Then you pull out photographs from a few months earlier and suddenly realize how much has happened.

The baby who once fit perfectly on your forearm now fills your lap.

The newborn who slept through everything now has opinions about everything.

The tiny baby who needed help with every task is suddenly determined to do things on their own.

Photographs allow us to see those changes in a way that memory alone often cannot.

The Moments In Between Matter Too

One of the reasons I offer milestone sessions throughout the first year is because I don’t think the moments between newborn and first birthday should be overlooked.

The sitter stage is worth remembering.

The gummy smiles are worth remembering.

The curious expressions, the belly laughs, the chubby cheeks, and the growing confidence are all worth remembering.

Those milestones may not come with birthday candles or a big celebration, but they are still part of your child’s story.

Why I Created A First-Year Milestone Program

Over the years, I found myself having conversations with parents who wished they had documented more of their baby’s first year.

That’s one of the reasons I created a milestone program for my maternity and newborn clients.

The details are shared exclusively with those families, but the goal is simple.

I wanted to make it easier for parents to preserve more of the journey instead of feeling like they had to choose just one moment to document.

There is something incredibly special about seeing maternity, newborn, milestone, and first birthday photographs displayed together. Each session tells part of the story, but together they create a much bigger picture.

Looking Back Is Different Than Living It

When you’re in the middle of sleepless nights, diaper changes, and endless loads of laundry, it’s easy to feel like the baby stage will last forever.

Then one day you look back and realize it didn’t.

The first year has a way of slipping by quietly.

Photographs don’t stop time, but they do help us hold onto pieces of it.

Years later, they allow us to revisit moments that would otherwise become blurrier with time.

If I Could Give Parents One Piece Of Advice

If you’re considering professional photography during your baby’s first year, my advice would be not to wait for a single “perfect” milestone.

The first year isn’t special because of one day.

It’s special because of all the little moments that happen along the way.

The excitement of pregnancy.

The newborn snuggles.

The first smiles.

The sitter stage.

The growing personality.

The first birthday celebration.

Every chapter deserves to be remembered because every chapter helps tell the story of how your family grew.

And when you look back years from now, you’ll be grateful for every piece of that story you chose to preserve.
