One of my favorite things about photographing babies is getting to watch them grow.
When I photograph a newborn, I know that if I see that same family again in a few months, the baby is going to look completely different. Not a little different. Completely different.
Parents are usually so busy living in the moment that they don’t always notice the changes happening right in front of them. Then they look back at photographs from a few months earlier and suddenly realize how much their baby has grown.
That’s one of the reasons I love milestone sessions.
A lot of families think professional photos begin with newborn portraits and then pick back up again at the first birthday. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, some of my favorite baby sessions happen in the months in between.
The first year is packed with changes, and every stage brings something new.
Think about it for a minute.
A newborn spends most of their day sleeping and snuggled in someone’s arms.
A few months later they’re smiling.
Then they’re laughing.
Before long they’re sitting up, grabbing their toes, reaching for everything within arm’s length, and showing off a personality that seems to get bigger every week.
It’s amazing how much development happens in such a short amount of time.
As a photographer, I get a front-row seat to those changes, and that’s why I believe the milestones in between newborn and first birthday are worth celebrating too.
Because I believe the first year passes so quickly, I created a milestone program specifically for my maternity and newborn families.
Many parents fall in love with documenting their baby’s journey and don’t want to wait until the first birthday to schedule photos again. For those families, I offer milestone sessions at 3, 6, and 9 months so we can capture the incredible changes that happen throughout that first year.
These sessions are offered at a discounted rate as a thank-you to my maternity and newborn clients who continue their photography journey with me.
The details of this program are shared exclusively with my maternity and newborn families, but it has become one of my favorite ways to help parents preserve their baby’s first year from beginning to end.
There is something incredibly special about watching a family go from maternity portraits, to newborn photos, to milestone sessions, and eventually to a first birthday celebration. Looking through those galleries together tells a story that simply can’t be captured in a single session.
If you’ve ever heard photographers talk about “sitter sessions,” there is a reason we get excited about them.
This stage usually happens when babies can sit independently but aren’t yet interested in running away from us.
They’re often full of smiles, fascinated by the world around them, and eager to interact with everything they see.
More importantly, their personalities are really starting to shine.
Some babies spend the entire session laughing.
Some carefully study every prop I place in front of them.
Some are serious little observers who seem determined to figure everything out before giving me a smile.
Whatever their personality happens to be, this stage is such a fun one to document.
This may sound strange coming from a photographer who offers milestone sessions, but the milestone itself isn’t actually my favorite part.
What I love is documenting who your child is during that season of life.
The way they smile.
The expressions they make.
The way they wrinkle their nose when they laugh.
The way they proudly sit up and look around like they’ve just conquered the world.
Those little details are what parents end up falling in love with when they receive their gallery.
I’ve had parents tell me they almost skipped milestone photos because life got busy.
And honestly, I understand.
Between work, sports, school activities, doctor’s appointments, and everything else that comes with family life, it’s easy to think you’ll get around to it later.
But later has a funny way of showing up quickly.
Before you know it, the baby who was just learning to sit is running through the house, and you’re wondering where the time went.
Photographs have a way of slowing things down for just a moment.
They allow us to hold onto stages that otherwise seem to disappear overnight.
When parents ask me if milestone sessions are worth doing, my answer is usually pretty simple.
Your baby’s first year only happens once.
The first smile only happens once.
The first time they sit independently only happens once.
The first time their personality starts showing up in every expression only happens once.
Those moments may not come with birthday candles or a cake, but they’re every bit as important.
And years from now, when you’re looking back through your photographs, you’ll be glad you didn’t wait for a birthday to document them.
