When parents begin planning their baby’s first birthday session, they usually fall into one of two categories.
The first group has been planning for months. They have screenshots saved, Pinterest boards organized, and a very clear vision of exactly what they want.
The second group arrives with absolutely no idea where to start.
Honestly, both approaches are completely fine.
Over the years, I’ve designed cake smash sessions for families who knew every detail before they booked and for families whose entire theme started with, “I trust you. What do you think would be cute?”
The good news is that there isn’t a right or wrong way to approach a cake smash session.
Some families love a beautifully styled set with lots of details, while others prefer something much simpler. Both can result in a gallery that perfectly captures this exciting milestone.
One of the reasons I enjoy cake smash sessions so much is because every child is different, which means every session has the opportunity to be different as well.
There seems to be a misconception that every cake smash session needs to be elaborate in order to be successful.
That couldn’t be further from the truth.
Some of the most timeless first birthday portraits I’ve created have featured a simple backdrop, a beautiful cake, and a baby whose personality completely stole the show.
When the setup is simple, the focus naturally stays on your child. Years from now, those images still feel classic because they aren’t tied to a specific trend or character that may have been popular at the time.
On the other hand, if you’re the type of parent who has been planning a theme since your baby was six months old, I fully support that as well.
In fact, designing themed cake smash sets is one of my favorite parts of what I do.
It’s also one of the reasons many families book with me for their baby’s first birthday session.
I genuinely enjoy taking an idea and turning it into a set that feels fun, unique, and personalized to each child. Whether we’re pulling inspiration from a favorite book, a birthday party theme, a hobby, a color palette, or something completely unexpected, I love the creative process behind bringing those ideas to life.
Something that surprises many parents is that the custom set is included with their session.
You don’t need to purchase backdrops, decorations, or props on your own unless there’s a very specific item you’d like incorporated.
Once we decide on a direction, I take care of building a set that photographs beautifully and works well for your session.
Some themes end up being simple and elegant. Others become detailed and over-the-top. Both are equally fun to create.
If you’ve been putting off booking because you don’t know what theme you want, let me save you some stress.
You don’t have to have everything figured out before reaching out.
Some of my favorite cake smash sessions started with a parent telling me they had absolutely no clue what they wanted.
That’s where experience comes in.
After photographing many first birthday sessions over the years, I’ve helped families narrow down ideas, choose colors, and create setups that fit their vision even when they weren’t quite sure what that vision was yet.
As much as I love creating sets, the theme is really just the backdrop to the main event.
Your baby is the reason we’re there.
The smiles, expressions, curiosity, and personality that have developed over the past year are what make these sessions special.
Whether we create something simple and timeless or something elaborate and full of details, the goal remains the same: celebrating your baby’s first birthday and preserving this stage before it disappears into the next one.
If you already have a theme in mind, I’d love to hear it.
And if you don’t, that’s perfectly fine too. We can figure it out together.
