One thing many parents don’t realize when booking a cake smash session is that they don’t necessarily have to shop for an outfit at all.
I do provide cake smash outfits for babies as part of the session experience, which many parents appreciate because planning a first birthday can already feel like a full-time job. Having one less thing to worry about is always a win.
Of course, if you already have a special outfit picked out, you’re more than welcome to bring it. Some parents have a birthday outfit they’ve fallen in love with, a family heirloom, or something that ties into their theme. I’m happy to incorporate those as well.
The goal is simply to choose something that feels like your child and photographs beautifully.
After photographing many cake smash sessions over the years, I’ve found that simple outfits tend to age the best.
That doesn’t mean plain or boring. It simply means the focus stays on your baby rather than getting distracted by lots of layers, accessories, or busy patterns.
A classic romper, a sweet dress, overalls, bloomers, or one of the outfits available through my client wardrobe can create timeless images that still look beautiful years from now.
When parents look back at these photos, they’re usually focused on their baby’s expressions and personality, not the details of the outfit.
By the time babies reach their first birthday, they’re busy little people. Some are crawling, some are walking, and some are determined to explore every inch of the studio.
Because of that, comfort is important.
An outfit that allows your baby to move freely is almost always going to lead to a happier experience than something stiff or restrictive. When babies are comfortable, they tend to be more relaxed, more expressive, and more willing to interact with the cake and their surroundings.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from photographing first birthday sessions, it’s that parents often spend far more time worrying about the outfit than they need to.
The truth is that your baby is what makes the images special.
Years from now, you’ll remember the smile they gave when they tasted frosting for the first time or the look on their face when they realized they were allowed to make a mess. Those are the moments that become priceless.
The outfit is simply there to complement the memory.
