Wondering if your spouse and children should join your maternity photos? Learn why family maternity portraits often become the most treasured images of all.

Why family maternity photos often become the most treasured images of all.

One of the questions I hear most often from expecting moms is:

“Should my husband and children be included in my maternity session?”

The short answer is absolutely.

While beautiful portraits of mom and her growing baby bump are always an important part of a maternity session, some of the most meaningful images often include the people who are anxiously waiting to welcome baby too.

Pregnancy isn’t just a journey for mom. It’s a season of anticipation for the entire family.

Maternity Photos Tell a Bigger Story

When most people think of maternity photography, they picture a beautiful portrait of an expecting mother.

While those images are important, maternity sessions are really about documenting a family’s story during a season of transition.

Your baby may not have arrived yet, but they are already deeply loved.

Including your spouse and children helps tell the complete story of this chapter before your little one enters the world.

Including Dad Creates Meaningful Memories

Dads are often behind the scenes preparing for baby’s arrival, supporting mom, and counting down the days just as eagerly.

Including your husband or partner in your maternity session allows us to capture the connection between the two of you as you prepare to welcome your child.

Some of the most meaningful images are often the simplest:

  • A hand resting on mom’s belly
  • A quiet embrace
  • Looking at each other and imagining the future
  • Sharing a laugh together

Years from now, these images become a reminder of the excitement and anticipation you shared before meeting your baby.

Older Siblings Make the Session Even More Special

If you already have children, I highly encourage including them.

Some of the sweetest maternity photographs happen when older siblings are involved.

Tiny hands touching mom’s belly.

A big brother proudly talking about becoming a sibling.

A little sister hugging mom and giving kisses to baby.

These moments cannot be recreated once baby arrives.

They capture a unique season where your children are eagerly waiting to meet their newest family member.

Don’t Worry About Perfect Behavior

One concern many parents have is whether their children will cooperate during the session.

The good news is that perfection is not the goal.

Children are naturally curious, energetic, and sometimes unpredictable—and that’s perfectly okay.

Some of the most heartfelt images come from genuine interactions rather than perfectly posed smiles.

A cuddle, a laugh, a whispered secret, or even a silly moment often becomes a favorite photograph.

We Still Capture Plenty of Photos of Mom

Many expecting mothers worry that including family members means there won’t be enough time for individual maternity portraits.

Not at all.

A well-planned maternity session includes a variety of images:

  • Mom by herself
  • Mom and dad together
  • The entire family
  • Children with mom
  • Detail images highlighting your baby bump

This creates a beautiful gallery that tells the complete story of your pregnancy while still celebrating you.

Studio, Outdoor, or Both

Whether your session takes place in the studio, outdoors, or a combination of both, family members are always welcome.

Many families enjoy the flexibility of capturing elegant studio portraits before heading outside for natural, relaxed images.

Every maternity session is customized to fit your family’s personality and vision.

What If My Husband Doesn’t Like Photos?

You’re not alone.

In fact, this may be one of the most common things moms tell me before booking.

The truth is, most dads aren’t excited about taking photos.

They’re excited about supporting their family.

The good news is that maternity sessions are designed to be relaxed and natural. There is very little standing stiffly and smiling at the camera.

Instead, I guide families through simple prompts and interactions that create genuine moments and natural expressions.

Many dads leave saying it was much easier—and much more enjoyable—than they expected.

These Photos Become More Valuable Over Time

Right now, it may feel like you’re simply documenting your pregnancy.

Years from now, you’ll realize you were documenting something much bigger.

You were preserving:

  • The excitement before baby arrived
  • The anticipation of becoming parents
  • The joy of becoming a bigger family
  • The love that already existed before your child was born

Those memories only become more valuable with time.

My Recommendation? Include Them.

If you’re wondering whether your husband and children should join your maternity session, my answer is almost always yes.

Of course, we’ll capture beautiful images of you and your growing baby bump.

But some of the images you’ll treasure most may be the ones that include the people waiting right beside you for baby’s arrival.

Because maternity photography isn’t just about pregnancy.

It’s about family.
