When Should I Schedule My Maternity Photos?

A Complete Guide for Expecting Moms in Galveston County and the Houston Area

Pregnancy is one of the most beautiful and life-changing seasons of life. Between preparing the nursery, attending doctor appointments, and counting down the days until you meet your little one, it can be easy to put maternity photos on the back burner.

One of the most common questions I receive as a maternity photographer is:

“When should I schedule my maternity photos?”

The short answer is:

The best time for maternity photos is typically between 28 and 34 weeks pregnant.

During this window, your baby bump is beautifully round and noticeable, while most moms are still comfortable enough to walk, pose, and enjoy their session.

Why 28-34 Weeks Is the Sweet Spot

Every pregnancy is different, but this timeframe works well for most expecting mothers because:

  • Your belly is clearly visible and photographs beautifully.
  • Swelling is often less severe than in the final weeks.
  • You are generally more comfortable moving around.
  • There is less risk of baby arriving before your session.
  • You still have time to receive and enjoy your images before your little one arrives.

What If I’m Having Twins?

If you’re expecting twins or multiples, I typically recommend scheduling your maternity session earlier, around 24-30 weeks.

Twin pregnancies often become more physically demanding sooner, and babies can arrive earlier than expected. Planning ahead helps ensure we capture this special season before you become too uncomfortable.

What If I’m Already Past 34 Weeks?

Don’t panic!

I have photographed beautiful maternity sessions as late as 38 weeks. If you’re further along, reach out anyway. As long as you’re feeling well and your doctor has not placed restrictions on activity, we can often still create stunning images.

When Should I Book My Maternity Photographer?

While maternity photos are usually taken between 28 and 34 weeks, I recommend booking your photographer during your second trimester whenever possible.

Many photographers, especially during spring and fall, fill their calendars weeks or even months in advance.

Booking early allows you to:

  • Secure your preferred date.
  • Access wardrobe planning assistance.
  • Reserve dresses from a client closet if available.
  • Have plenty of time to prepare for your session.

What Should I Wear for Maternity Photos?

One of the biggest concerns many expecting moms have is figuring out what to wear for their maternity session. The good news? You don’t have to stress about it.

I offer a beautifully curated client closet filled with maternity gowns and dresses specifically selected to photograph beautifully. From flowing gowns that create movement to elegant fitted dresses that highlight your growing bump, there are options for a variety of styles and preferences.

Many moms love being able to arrive without the pressure of purchasing an expensive dress they’ll likely only wear once. My goal is to make your maternity session as simple and stress-free as possible while helping you feel beautiful and confident in front of the camera.

Of course, you’re always welcome to wear your own clothing if you have a special outfit you’d like to incorporate into your session.

Should My Family Be Included?

Absolutely.

Many expecting moms choose to include:

  • Their spouse or partner
  • Older children
  • Fur babies
  • Special heirlooms or meaningful items

Including your family helps tell the complete story of this season and creates memories your children will treasure for years to come.

Studio or Outdoor Maternity Photos?

One of my favorite things about maternity sessions is that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach.

When booking your maternity session with me, you have the option of choosing:

  • Studio portraits
  • Outdoor portraits
  • Or a combination of both

Many expecting moms love starting in the studio for timeless, classic portraits before heading outdoors for beautiful natural light and sunset images. Combining both locations allows for more variety and creates a gallery that truly tells the story of this special season.

If you prefer one location over the other, that’s perfectly fine too. Every maternity session is customized to fit your vision, comfort level, and personal style.

Whether we’re creating elegant studio portraits, chasing golden light outdoors, or combining both experiences, the goal remains the same—to capture this incredible chapter before your little one arrives.

Do I Need to Know How to Pose?

Many moms arrive nervous, telling me they’ve never had professional photos taken before. The good news is that you don’t need any modeling experience at all.

Throughout your session, I will guide you every step of the way—from where to place your hands to natural movements and interactions that create beautiful, flattering images. My goal is for you to feel relaxed, comfortable, and confident so your images reflect the excitement and joy of this season.

That section addresses another huge fear pregnant moms search for before booking. It also sells you rather than just maternity photography in general. 💕

Your pregnancy may feel long some days, but this season passes faster than you realize.

Before long, the kicks will become tiny fingers, tiny toes, and sleepless nights with your newborn in your arms.

Maternity photos preserve the anticipation, excitement, and love that exists before your baby arrives—memories that deserve to be remembered.

If you’re expecting and wondering when to schedule your maternity photos, the answer is simple:

The best time is usually between 28 and 34 weeks pregnant, but the best time to book is now.
