Simple wardrobe tips for beautiful, timeless newborn portraits.

Bringing home a new baby comes with a million decisions.

Thankfully, choosing what to wear for your newborn session doesn’t have to be one of the stressful ones.

One of the questions I hear most often from parents is:

“What should we wear for our newborn photos?”

The answer actually depends on one important question first:

Will the session be baby only, or will family members be participating as well?

The wonderful thing about newborn photography is that there is no right or wrong answer.

Some families want the entire focus to be on their new baby.

Others want to document the connection between parents, siblings, and their newest family member.

My newborn sessions are designed around your family’s preferences.

Baby Only Sessions

Many parents choose a newborn session that focuses entirely on baby.

These sessions highlight all of the tiny details that change so quickly:

  • Tiny fingers
  • Tiny toes
  • Sweet sleepy expressions
  • Soft newborn features
  • Little stretches and yawns

When baby is the star of the session, parents can simply relax while I handle the styling.

I provide a carefully curated collection of:

  • Wraps
  • Blankets
  • Bonnets
  • Headbands
  • Hats
  • Newborn props
  • Simple accessories

Many families love the convenience of arriving and having everything prepared for them.

If Parents Will Be In The Photos

If you plan to be photographed with your baby, simplicity is always best.

Newborn portraits are about connection and emotion.

The focus should remain on your family and your new baby rather than busy clothing patterns.

Some great options include:

  • Creams
  • Whites
  • Beige
  • Soft grays
  • Light earth tones
  • Soft blues
  • Muted pastels

These colors create a timeless look that allows your baby to remain the center of attention.

What Should Mom Wear?

The first thing I tell new mothers is this:

Be comfortable.

You have just done something incredible.

The last thing I want is for you to feel uncomfortable or stressed about wardrobe.

Soft, flowy tops, simple dresses, oversized sweaters, neutral-colored clothing, or pieces from my client closet often photograph beautifully.

Most importantly, choose something that makes you feel comfortable and confident.

Don’t Forget About the Client Closet

One thing many new moms love is knowing they don’t have to go shopping for a newborn session outfit.

I offer a selection of dresses in my client closet that photograph beautifully for newborn and family portraits. These options are chosen with comfort and timeless style in mind, making it easy for moms to feel confident without the stress of finding something new to wear during those busy first weeks with a baby.

One of my favorite options is when a mother chooses to wear the same maternity gown she wore during her maternity session.

There is something incredibly special about seeing those images side by side.

First, the anticipation of waiting for your baby.

Then, the joy of finally holding them in your arms.

Using the same gown can beautifully tie your maternity and newborn galleries together while telling the complete story of your journey into motherhood.

Of course, whether you choose a dress from the client closet, re-wear your maternity gown, or wear something from your own wardrobe, the goal is always the same—to create images that feel authentic, comfortable, and uniquely yours.

What Should Dad Wear?

Dads tend to overthink this less than moms—and honestly, that’s not a bad thing.

Simple is best.

A neutral-colored shirt or henley paired with jeans or neutral pants works wonderfully for newborn portraits.

The goal is a timeless look that complements the rest of the family without drawing attention away from baby.

What About Siblings?

If older siblings will be participating, coordinating colors rather than matching exactly tends to create the most natural look.

Soft, neutral tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus on the relationships being captured.

And don’t worry too much about perfection.

The connection between siblings and their new baby brother or sister is what matters most.

Less Is Often More

One of the biggest misconceptions about newborn photography is that everyone needs elaborate outfits.

The truth is that some of the most beautiful newborn portraits are the simplest.

Years from now, you’ll be looking at:

  • Tiny eyelashes
  • Little fingers wrapped around yours
  • The way your baby fit perfectly in your arms

Not whether your shirt had the perfect pattern.

What If I Don’t Want To Be In The Photos?

That’s completely okay too.

Some families book newborn sessions specifically to document their baby and prefer not to be photographed themselves.

Others choose to include just a few parent images.

Others want a full family experience.

There is no pressure and no expectation.

Your newborn session is customized around what feels right for your family.

The Most Important Thing You Can Wear

At the end of the day, the most important thing isn’t your outfit.

It’s being present.

These early newborn days pass incredibly quickly.

The photographs we create together preserve a season that will never come again.

Whether you choose a baby-only session or include the entire family, my goal is to create timeless images you’ll treasure for years to come.

Because long after the newborn stage is gone, these photographs become part of your family’s story.
