Preparing for newborn photos? Learn simple tips for feeding, clothing, sibling participation, and how to create a stress-free newborn photography experience.
Simple tips to help your session go as smoothly as possible.
Bringing home a new baby is exciting, emotional, and often a little overwhelming.
Between feedings, diaper changes, and adjusting to life with a newborn, preparing for a photo session may feel like one more thing on your to-do list.
The good news?
Preparing for your newborn session is actually much easier than most parents expect.
My goal is to make the experience relaxed, enjoyable, and stress-free so you can focus on soaking in these precious first days with your baby.
Don’t Stress About Perfection
Let’s start with the most important thing.
Your baby does not need to be perfect.
You do not need to be perfect.
Your family does not need to be perfect.
Babies cry.
Babies need to eat.
Babies need diaper changes.
Babies have good days and occasionally have fussy days.
All of that is completely normal.
The best thing you can do before your session is give yourself permission to relax.
Feed Baby Before or Upon Arrival
A full baby is often a happy baby.
If possible, I recommend feeding your little one shortly before arriving or once you arrive at the studio.
Many babies settle beautifully after a full feeding and some extra cuddles.
Of course, every baby is different, and we will always follow your baby’s needs throughout the session.
Dress Baby in Something Easy to Remove
One helpful tip is to dress your baby in a simple zip-up or button-up outfit before the session.
This allows us to transition baby into wraps and setups without unnecessarily disturbing them.
The less we have to move a sleepy baby, the better.
Bring the Essentials
While I provide wraps, blankets, headbands, bonnets, props, and styling items, I recommend bringing:
Extra diapers
Wipes
Bottles if bottle feeding
Formula if needed
Burp cloths
A pacifier if baby uses one
These items help ensure we have everything needed to keep baby comfortable throughout the session.
Prepare Older Siblings
If brothers or sisters will be joining the session, a little preparation beforehand can go a long way.
Talk about the baby.
Talk about pictures.
Help them understand they’ll get a chance to be in photos too.
Most importantly, keep expectations realistic.
Children are children.
I don’t expect perfection.
I expect personality.
Some of the sweetest sibling images happen when children are simply being themselves.
Family Participation Is Your Choice
One thing I love about newborn sessions is that every family is different.
Some families want baby-only portraits.
Some want family photographs.
Some want sibling images.
Some want a little bit of everything.
There is no right or wrong answer.
We’ll customize the session around what feels right for your family.
Don’t Forget About the Client Closet
If parents will be participating, remember that I do offer dresses within my client closet for mothers who want a beautiful and easy wardrobe option.
Many moms appreciate not having to shop for something new during those busy newborn weeks.
If you previously booked a maternity session, you are also welcome to wear the same gown again.
I love seeing maternity and newborn galleries tied together through a dress that was part of both milestones.
The anticipation of pregnancy followed by the joy of holding your baby creates a beautiful story.
Plan for a Relaxed Morning
If possible, avoid scheduling a dozen errands before your session.
Give yourself time.
Leave a little early.
Take a deep breath.
Newborn sessions are not meant to feel rushed.
The more relaxed you are, the more enjoyable the experience tends to be.
Trust the Process
This may be the most important preparation tip of all.
Trust the process.
You do not need to know how to pose.
You do not need a perfectly sleeping baby.
You do not need a Pinterest checklist.
My job is to guide you through the entire experience and create beautiful images while keeping your baby safe and comfortable.
Remember What Matters Most
Years from now, you won’t remember whether everything went perfectly.
You’ll remember your tiny baby.
The way they fit in your arms.
The way they stretched.
The way they yawned.
The way they looked at you.
Those are the memories we’re preserving.
Not perfection.
Just this beautiful season exactly as it is.
And trust me, that’s more than enough.
