Including your first baby in the memories.
One of my favorite questions to hear from expecting parents is:
“Can we bring our dog to our maternity session?”
My answer is almost always:
Absolutely!
For many families, their dog was their first baby long before pregnancy tests, baby showers, and nursery decorating began.
They’ve been there through date nights, lazy Sundays, road trips, house moves, and every milestone leading up to this exciting season of life.
So why shouldn’t they be part of your maternity photos too?
When I ask clients about their family, many immediately mention their pets.
And honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Our pets hold a special place in our hearts. They are part of our story.
Including your dog in your maternity session is a wonderful way to document this chapter of life before your family grows.
Years from now, you’ll love looking back at those images and remembering the season when it was the two of you, your dog, and the baby you were anxiously waiting to meet.
There is something incredibly special about the connection between expecting parents and their pets.
Some favorite moments often include:
The best part?
Many of these moments happen naturally.
They aren’t forced.
They’re genuine interactions that tell your family’s story.
This is probably the biggest concern I hear.
“But my dog doesn’t sit still.”
“What if they don’t listen?”
“They’re kind of crazy.”
Trust me.
I’ve worked with plenty of dogs over the years.
And just like children, perfection is never the goal.
Some dogs are calm and relaxed.
Some are full of energy.
Some are more interested in sniffing every blade of grass than looking at the camera.
That’s okay.
Some of the best images come from simply letting them be themselves.
If you’d like your dog included in your maternity session, a little preparation can help everything run smoothly.
I recommend:
These simple steps can make a big difference and help everyone enjoy the experience.
One approach many families love is beginning the session with everyone together, including the dog.
Once we’ve captured those images, your pet can take a break while we continue with maternity portraits, couples portraits, and individual images of mom.
This gives you the best of both worlds.
One of the things I love about photographing maternity sessions at The Little Ranch Farm is having room to move and explore.
The open spaces provide a relaxed environment that often helps pets feel more comfortable than they might in a crowded public location.
The result is a more natural experience for both families and their furry companions.
Anyone who has loved a pet knows the truth:
We never get enough time with them.
That is one reason I love including dogs in family and maternity sessions whenever possible.
These images become more valuable with each passing year.
They’re not just documenting your pregnancy.
They’re documenting your family exactly as it was during this special season.
Maternity photography is about more than documenting a baby bump.
It’s about preserving a chapter of your life.
And for many families, that chapter absolutely includes a wagging tail and four furry paws.
If your dog is part of your family, they’re welcome to be part of your memories too.
Because some of life’s sweetest moments are the ones shared with the people—and pets—we love most.
As an animal lover myself, I know how important our pets are. They are often part of some of life’s biggest milestones, and I love helping families include them whenever possible.
